PRESS RELEASE: State Senator Gomez Endorses Garcia for Holyoke Mayor

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 27, 2021 HOLYOKE — State Sen. Adam Gomez (D-Hampden District) on Friday, July 23rd, endorsed Joshua A. Garcia’s candidacy for Holyoke Mayor.

Of this first political endorsement, Garcia said, “I am humbled to have received the support of Senator Gomez. For as long as I have known Senator Gomez, he has shown himself to be a leader, a game changer, and a strong advocate for equity and inclusion. It’s an honor to have his endorsement.”

Senator Adam Gomez said “Joshua is the strongest candidate for Mayor of Holyoke. Not only is he born and raised in Holyoke, educated in the school system, a reflection of his community, and strong advocate for his City, he has direct administrative municipal experience which makes him the right choice to lead Holyoke. He is a former elected representative of the School Committee, served on the Fire Commission, worked as the Municipal Services Manager of the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, and now currently running a local government as Town Administrator. These are the experiences that qualify Josh and make him the best candidate.”

Gomez is the first Latino elected to the State Senate from Springfield and the first Puerto Rican to serve in the Senate. Garcia, also of Puerto Rican descent, said he looks forward to not only transfer his skillset to help put Holyoke on a stronger path, but also looks forward to being the first Puerto Rican Mayor of Holyoke, a city that is more than half Latino and has more Puerto Ricans per capita than any other city in the United States outside of the island of Puerto Rico.

Holyoke’s preliminary election is September 21. The general election is November 2.
